TOKOMARU NEWS.

(From our own Correspondent.) M(uch needed rain commenced to fall yesterday, which many waterless residents will appreciate. A social . evening, tendered to the Rev. J. C. Abbott and Mrs Abbott on Tuesday, proved a great success. During the evening items were rendered by Mrs S. Parr, and Miss Waghorn, the former singing “Because” in a full contralto voice.. A dialogue by the younger girls was well received, despite the fact that a substitute had to be hastily requisitioned in the absence of Master Mervyn Phillips. Miss Norma Kelly and Miss K. Boots faithfully portrayed two elderly maiden ladies; Miss Jean Lampard and Miss Mavis Reid ably impersonated two young men, and-Miss Lampard, the maid, Miss Arornea Rowlands filling the gap very satisfactorily at a moment’s notice. Various other items interspersed with dancing were well received, one in. particular being a pianoforte, solo by Miss Williams.

Later on in the evening, Mr Parr, on behalf of the people, presented Mr Abbott with a well-filled purse, while M,rs Abbott was the recipient of a bouquet of Michaelmas daisies and chrysanthemums. In thanking those present, Mr Abbott referred to the regret felt in the unavoidable absence i of Miss Kelly, and Mr J. R. Whyte, and also of Mr Palmer being unable to attend. A committee of ladies earned out supper arrangements succesfully, Mrs J. A. Whyte quietly and unostentatiously superintending the programme, and Mr Whyte acting as master of ceremonies. Mr and Mrs Ram age supplied the music for - the dance, and for the items. Miss Wake acted as accompanist. The gathering dispersed at one O'’clock.
