THE RAETIHI SENSATION.
PROVES A HOAX. RAETIHI, April 18. The Raetihi sensation has proved to be j;u hoiaix. The affair caused a sensation here. On Thursday night Mrs Warnock was discovered by her daughter hound hand and foot, with a bandage over her mouth. She alleged she was alttacked by a masked burglar, and that a quantity of jewellery had been stolen.
Inquiries wiere made by Constable McCowan, and Detective-sergeant Gourlay arrived from Wanganui. The latter Was not long in getting to the bottom of the matter, and eventually under pressure, Mrs Warnock, admitted that the whole thing was a hoax. She appeared to be suffering from mental stress, and it was considered advisable to send her to the Raetihi hospital for treatment.
The cleaning up of the matter allayed the feeling of alarm that was erected, although the police were sceptical from the outset.
