The Colonial Secretary, Mr. Thomas told an amusing story at the Empire Parliamentary. Association’s luncheon of how he lost himself in the maze of the Colonial Office corridors, and sought the services of a guide. The guide, not recognising him, became confidential and asked him if he were a temporary civil servant. Mr. Thomas: Yes. Guide: I’ve been here four months. Mr. Thomas: I’ve only been here six weeks. Guide (in tones of gloomy self-sat-isfaction) : Ah ! Then you’ll be sacked before me Mr. Thomas added that, not having then paid for his court dress, he felt a bit disturbed as to the possibility of ( his never requiring it !
