SEWERAGE SCHEME.

APPROXIMATE COST £7500. •At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday 'e Veiling the Engineer (Mr Edwards) submitted the following - scheme ’ and approximate cost for a sewerage for Shannon: I propose to take- a 12-inch diameter outfall pipe along Johnson street and discharge the -effluent! after going over the filter beds into the Mangaore stream. The drainage from Shannon will pass into;, a concrete septic tank and from there on to filter beds and then by means of the 12-inch, diameter outfaill pipe into the Mangaore stream. The septic tank and filter hods will be designed on the lines of the latest'and approved system, and . will be of such dimensions as will dea(l with a population of 6000. The area, to he sewered is set out in the

estimate. Shannon, comparatively, ! s an expensive town to sewer owing fn the scattered nature of the sites, of the residences. To attempt to put a c 'Cwpt in <everv street, is. in my opinion, not practical: the cost to the ratepayers Avonld he far too great a h’irderi for them 10 hear. I -propose *n nut in permanent tank and out'■•<ll :nui include only in the meantime that Portion of the town where the buildings are close together and such portion as are actually necessary to keep Iho town in a healthy state. T may remark that thlet. proposed plan of htnk and filter beds will be larger than the immediate requirements and will be the system approved by world-wide authorities, i.e.. Boards -of Health and the .institute of Civil Engineers and of Architects. I suggest that the councillors should pnv a. visit of inspection to some septic tank in work. The scheme as set out I estimate to cost, approxilßStely £7500.

After the Engineer had given an outline on the area to he served-.un-do r fiis proposed scheme several councillors expressed themselves a,s agreeably surprised at the low cost.

Further discussion on the proposed scheme will be dealt with at a special m'eeting to be held on Wednesday evening, March 26th.
