SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
RESOLUTIONS DISCUSSED,
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Borough Council a letter was received front the Shannon Chamber of Commerce urging that the following matters receives the Council’s attention:— (1) To consider placing name plates at street corners; (2) placing a silent policeman at intersection of Plimmer Terrace and Ballance street, which corner the Chamber considers an extremely dangerous one; (3) enforcing the by-laws to comped motor cyclists to carry silencer and to take acttion against cyclists riding on the footpaths and riding at night without. a light. The Mayor took strong exception to the latter suggestion from the' Chamber. He said they knew very well that the Council had already taken action in. this matter and the police had been written to oh two ; different occasions, but they had not done anything to/remedy the trouble. The resolution in his mind would convey the opinion to the public that the Council had done nothing in this matter.
Cr. Beard sad the objects of the Chamber was to bring suggestions before the Council and to help them. He said the Chamber was fully aware that the Council had written to the police to enforce the by-law. The resolution, was brought forward with the idea of getting something done. The Mayor heatedly contended that tlie matter had been given unfair publicity when framing the- resolution by not. stating that the Council had already taken action. Finally it was decided that, the police he again written to asking them to take action, and pointing out that no convictions had yet .been made and that most flagrant breaches have been committed. As regards the name plates • for streets Cr: Beard said he understood there was already a minute that this work should be done. The Mayor said he believed there was, but there were a lot more important matters needed attention first. Cr. Beard said name plates for streets were badly needed, as it was most difficult for a stranger to find the street he wanted as a large number of local residents even did not know, the names. In referring to the placing of a “silent policeman” at the site mentioned Cr. Hyde said it was a dangerous corner as the majority go round on their wrong side and something Will have to b© done. He also agreed with name plates being erected at, the street- corners. He moved and- Cr. Beard seconded, “That a sum of money b© placed on tfoe estimates for the coming year for tlie placing of a “silent policeman” at the intersection of Plimmer Terrace and Ballance St., and also for . the erection of name plates at street corners.” The Mayor said he would strongly oppose the erection of name plates for the streets. As he considered it was far more important that ratepayers should have footpaths and propter access to their properties and this work should be carried out first. He mentioned Vance street, as a.n instance, where the residents in the winter time have to wade through the mud to get to their gates. He admitted both these items in the motion were wanted but the work he had mentioned should be done first.. On the motion being put it was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor. Tlie Mayor (again impressed on the Council that he was not against the proposals, but/ certain footpaths had to be formed and blocks laid so that people can get in, and out of their residences. He said if the Council keep on spending £5 on everything that comes along, there would not be sufficient funds t.o carry out the work lie had mentioned.
