All Washington society .is talking of what published accounts describe as "ah affront to Dr. Otto Wiedfeldt, the German Ambassador, by Baroness de Cartier de Marchienne, the American wife of the Belgian Ambassador/'
It appears that, at a dinner given recently by the President and "Mrs Coolidgo to the Diplomatic Corps, the seating arrangments (which at State dinners are regulated by order of precedence and generally are in charge of the State Department) were such that Dr. Wiedfeldt was to escort the baroness.
"The Baroness," (says he "Washington Post") "appears to have known beforehand of this arrangement, and to have declared in no uncertain terms what she thought of it.
"Those in charge of the dinner are understood to have gathered that the baroness intended either to have another table companion or not to be present at the dinner.
"Accordingly, other arrangements were made; and the wife of the'Japanese Ambassador was escorted to the dining-room by Dr. Wiedfeldt/'
