MIRACULOUS ESCAPE OF FOUR PEOPLE. ... „ . i* A collision between tA\ r o motor-cars < took place in the Mainiwatu Gorge at ‘about 3.30' p.m. on Tuesday, both cars going over the bank. One containing . three people, lodged in some trees ‘ twenty feet doAvn. The other car Avent ;.to the bottom, the driver jumping out . before the vehicle Avent over. In conversation Avith the drivers after the accident, a reporter learned .' that the cars, one containing tAvo ladies and a man, Mr. and Mrs. Trunbull, of Whakatane, and Mrs. Trice, ‘of Hastings, and the other only the driver, tried, to pass each other while on the narrow portion of _ the rpacl. In the attempt, the sides of the cars became loSked, and both Avent over the bank. The solo driver Avas able to' jump out before the vehicle left the road, to somersault over and i over until .it reached the side of the river in a damaged condition. - The car with three on board lodged in some trefes trventy feet down, the ipassengors remaining in their seats, . and'subsequently reaching the road • again, unhurt. Both parties came into Palmerston North, leaving the cars Avhere they fell.
