MAIN ROAD TRAFFIC.
HfTERBSTING COUNTY TALLY. HUGE GROWTH OF MOTOR TRANSIT*. The tally taken by the Horowhenua County Council for purposes in connection with the Main Highways Act, gives sfpme interesting figures regarding the traffic on the Main County froad, the extent of which will come as a surprise to the ordinary ratepayer. The tally, which was taken on the Ohaui bridge, was compiled over a period extending from January 21 to February 4, 1924, the daily record commencing at 8 a.m. and covering the following 24 hours. As will be noted, the record covers a period when no large amount of holiday traffic would be moving and can be taken as fairly representative of the general wear and tear on the highway. A record which will be available later was also taken of the point of departure and destination of all motor traffic, with a view to ascertaining! the relative figures of local and through traffic. The different makes of cars and loading of lorries , was also taken, but it will be understood that the scheduling of this information is a lengthy process. . ■ The growth of traffic during the last six years, as shown by the table of traffic at the Waikawa Bridge taken over a similar period in 1918 is also illuminating, revealing as it does the growth of all classes of traffic And dtock ‘ figures incident on closer settlement. It is understood that the daily average of 68 drays for the period just completed includes an (average of only four milk vehicles per day, the remainder being engaged in carting vegetables, general produce, etc.
