Mr Thomas, statibnmaster, left Shannon on his annual leave yesterday. He is being relieved hy Mr O'Connor.

Yesterday a donation of £5 was received by the Mayor from -Mr H. Barber towards the Soldiers' Memorial Fund.

At the FeUding ram fair on Thursday last Mr Gordon Mitchell, of East Road, purchased one of the stud Southdown rams which took the first prize at the Feilclingi Show. , Mr Jack Riches, who recently broke his wrist while cranking a car, has been compelled to enter the v Palmerston Hospital to an operation to the injured limb. The rainfall in Shannon, as supplied by favour of Mr Sinclair, of Vance for the month of January was 2,42 inches. Rain fell on ten days, the heaviest being .69 inch on January 23. For the corresponding month in 1923, 7.72 inches fell on 25 days.

The gold medal donated by the Shannon Chamber of Commerce, which is to ibe awarded to the dux of the local school, who this year is Miss Vera Aim, is to be "presented by the president, of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr Gunning) at the School on Thursday next, February 14, at 9 a.m. AH parents and others interested are cordially invited to attend.

At the Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday night it was decided ,to draw the Borough Council's attention to the need of enforcing the bylaws to compel all motorists to have silencers on their vehicles. A member stated that last week a man narrowly escaped a serious accident owing to his horse becoming frightened and capsizing the gig into a ditch through a motor cyclist neglecting to use a silencer.

A new parochial district has been formed at Palmerston with its headquarters at St. Peter's, Terrace End. The Rev. J. Hobbs, who has charge of St. Peter's, which has hitherto been attached to All Saints', has resigned the cure owing to advancing years. From Easter time the new parish will be in the hands of the Rev. J. C. Abbott, of Shannon, who will be the first vicar.

As advertised in this issue, a euchre party and dance will toe held this evening- by the Ladies' Guild in the Parish Hall. Prizes will be given for winners of the euchre. The floor is in first-class order and altogether a jolly time may be expected. Euchre at 7.30~p.m.; dancing at 9.45 p.m. "I think it's a disgraceful habit for a woman to indulge in smoking cigarettes instead of doing her housework," said the defendant in a maintenance case heard in Christ church. "Oh!" said the Magistrate, "when you are older you probably will not mind that; it's becoming sso frequ'ent now!"
