THE GATEWAY TO SUNSHINE.
We have just received from the secretary of Dr. Barnardo's great child welfare institution a little booklet entitled "The Gateway to Sunshine," which sets out one or two striking examples of what is being done for the orphans or destitute children committed to their care. 95,775 children have been lifted out of the shadow into the sun; 7,308 are now being supported and trained; 5 are admitted daily. The charter of these National Homes is:—"No destitute child ever refused admission," there is no red tape, no votes are required, there is no waiting list—the need of the child is the only consideration. Many of these children come from the gloom of the slums. They are given a new environment. They grow up with healthy bodies and minds and are trained and placed out in the motherland or overseas Dominions as healthy, honest and God-fearing citizens. It is a good investment, for the children are the Nation's and indeed the Empire's greatest asset. Of the present occupants of the home 1328 are tiny tots of under five and an appeal is issued which it is hoped will appeal to everyone's charity and which will be instrumental in making the winter more cheerful for this large family. For 10s you can have the joy of feel- - ing that you are supporting one destitute little tot for one week. Subscriptions may be forwarded to Howard Williams, Hon. Treasurer, Dr. Barnardo's Homes, 18-26 Stepney Cansway, London E.i.
