ONE MILLION TO BE SPENT.
The new election for the Municipal Council of V.ienna will be held simultaneously with the general election for the National Assembly, on October 21, and, for the sake of economy, the number of councillors is to be reduced from I(JS to 120. The large majority of the municipality arc-. Social Democrats, who, whatever their tactical mistakes, have deserved welf, of the capital, and done much good in-the way of reconstruction work. .In order to give work to the unemployed and improve the state of things in Vienna, they are going to,spend another 311 milliard kronen (about £1,000,000), the largest amount so far*mvested for tbe purpose. Blocks of flats in the city, cottages ren's home are to be built. In the in the near vicinity, and a new child-north-west of .Vienna a little garden city is to be opened. The streets, sanitary arrangements, tram service, working of gas and electrify, and method of burial and cremation will be improved and enlarged. The notoriously bad paving metal used for the Vienna streets, which is the cause of so much dust, aim also consumption, is to be replaced by porphyritc, the municipality having acquired the available material. Further, quite a number of dilapidated buildings will be repaired, and the public lighting arrangements improved, and new bathing places (of which there is a sad dearth) opened. In a fine woody suburb a new "sun and air bath" has already been started by the municipality. "*" ■
