POWER BOARD’S HOUSING POLICY

NO GENERAL SCHEME TO BE UNDERTAKEN.

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Horowhenua Power Board considered the i question of erecting a house for the' installation inspector, .who stated that he (had been unsuccessful in finding a house to rent, and asked if .the Board would build a cottage. ’ The Finance Committee, to whom tl|e maitter f\yias referred, discussed the whole question of the building of cottages. , Generally it was' agreed that the Board would be ill-advised to increase capital expenditure by erection of houses for employees on any large scale. In this, instance, however, it was decided to recommend the Board to erect a-house considering that (1) It *is of decided "advantage that the Officer in question should reside near the works. (2) The Office is a permanent one, and when the officer is capable and the house question a settled one, there is the more likelihood of. retaining the services of a suitable man. (3) The reint. offered will- go a long way towards: paying the interest, etc., on the money invested.. (4) No further capital expenditure will be necessary for land., as thiei Board! already lhas moire than sufficient for the purpose. . / Mr Vamham was consulted as to the probable cost of a suitable cottage in hollow concrete. He ,submitted a plan of a four-roomed cottage in this material, without fencing or wiring. The' committee thought that this was somewhat on the small side, .but with the addition of another room it might serve the purpose. The, final recommendation of ithe committe'ie was “That the Boafd erect a~5-roomed cottage in hollow-concrete bn itsy property in Mako Mako road.’' This was agreed to.
