SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING.
SPENDING CARNIVAL MONEY
The monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held in the Schoolroom, on Thursday evening-. PresenT: Mr J. Murray (chairman), and,Messrs G. P. Anderson, S. Anderson, Warrington, Tippler, Hudson,. • Wiatkins, "Wjattorston a nd Carlyle (secretary). Correspondence was received from the Edjucaltion Board notifying* the appointment of Mrs E. P. Burns to the position recently held by Miss King, who has resigned. The chairman pointed' out that • there was still a vacancy owing to Mrs Burns toeing promoted, but it was hoped this would be filled at an early date. In neispect to the change of class books which, lias been decided on, the Education Board notified that the change would', not come into force until \1925, which, would enable booksellers to dispose of any of the old stock thiey might have on hand. Should! teachers desire to make a ; Change before 1925, they muslt usethose that have been decided on by thei department. RESULT! OF CARNIVAL. The Chairman presented to the meeting a statement /of receipts in connection with the recent School CJarnival, which showed the grosri receipts as being £35-4 2a, expenditure £27 JBs 9d leaving £326 3s 3d net. In referring to the successful result of the Carnival, he said' it was far ahead of anything anticipated when the Carnival was first mooted and he moved that the Secratary be instructed to write' to Mesdames Bovis and Laufvig expnessing the Committee's
thanks for the able assistance given ,by them in promoting the School Carnival and for their untiring efforts in carrying l the' 'thing' forward to such a successful issue; also that the , organisers iri tli'e queens be especially thanked together with all\ their sup- • porters, including the general public. The motion was unanimously carried. The qulestiotn oif allocating thiei money was then brought up by the Chairmjan and!- after discussion it was decided 1 to allocate it-«s follows: The sum-of £IOO to be set aside as a picnic fund for 1924,' Ihe balance to be definitely allocated as a special fund for school and ground improvements. On tti& motion of Mr G. 'P. Anderson, seconded Mr Hudson, it was de-
cided that the Education Board be
. communicated with .and informed that the commitilee lhavie liaised, certain money to, be utilised for 'improvements to -the 1 school and grounds and enquire what subsidy they were en- ■ titled to.
' Referring to matter of the. money Mi; G. P. Anderson jsaid it was i ono that must not be rushed*, , but would need very careful consideration as the committee were thiei trustees of ttile public and' it was their duty to see it< was properly spent. ■Mr Tippler thought it would b;e' a , good idea if the committee inviteil the school children, to- offer suggestions, of improvements to the'grounds, as then tjiere wouldjaa little chance of overlooking anything that was required. He moved that suggestions be enclosed in envelopes and placed in a box at the! .school in charge of the headmaster and that prizes of £L, 15s and 10s be offered for the best suggestion. All envelopes to be in riot later than December sth. A rough plan could be drawn, entrants to sign name and address.—This was agreied to. - .. , It was resolved on the motion or Mr Hudson, seconded by 'Mr Tippler, that the headmaster present .a report at each monthly meeting of the committee also that, a visiting committee • of two be appointed each month.
