THREE SHIFTS ON DAM
J Work is steadily progressing with the construction or the Arapeti dam. The .concrete is novr up above' the numirig across the. small creek. The work is .feeing speeded up and during ■last • week fltty new men , haye been, put on., No new work has.been opened up,'all hands being concentrated' on the dam, three shuts now being engaged. ; . v A ! newj quarry has been opened up above? the dam', towards the Tokomaru i Valley, w/here a ; plentiful supply .ol' stone is , how being' obtained for the crusher.- r The compressor • hfas now; ceased work ; owing to .work in the' tunnels being completed. Recently ai large number of tents ifaye been erected at Arapeti to house the additional men. Building is still going on and tents cannot'be erected fast enough. - the Top Gamp, Mangahao, a concrete coffer dam about 1Q feet high, and some three chains from the big dam, has, been 'built to protectY the work, while the diver is working at the foundation, of the dam proper. Although several floods Wave, been experienced recently they have not seriously held up the work which has been protected'by. the coffer \ dam. The excavating finished and. a start', will be made, at once with the concreting. 'Preparations are well advanced and a concrete mixer has been; erected on-the side of'the valley, which will shortly be ready to shoot the concrete down into, the dam. A ; start has been "made with the survey of No. 1 storage dam at-Man-gahao by Mr A. Hudson. This will be the largest dam of all, its holding Capacity being 650,000,000 gallons, while Mangahao No. 2 is 5001,000,000 and Arapeti 350,000;000.," , ' ..'. • Every effort is. being .made to be in. a' position to. release some power by June, but the ischeme will not be completed until later. ■'-. ■ , The work of concreting the Arapeti dami'has entailed a lot of carpentering, involving the.. erection of a large amount of staging' fop the trucks to run over, which of course means a net-work of scaffolding, the scene at the dam being a very animated one. Mr Hinton, who for.some time has been overseer .at the Arapeti ' dam, has left for Auckland. He has been succeeded by Mr J.. Jordan, . late of Ufte railway construction works.
Mr {Millar/ late of. Mangaore, is now foreman at Arapeti, Mr. Rogers having gone to Inglewood.
