THE TATTOOED WOMAN.
A LAUGHABLE FRAUD
At Grefenwicli, Frederick Bowman 1 (54), hawker, and his wife, were fined 40/- each on a charge of attempting to obtain a penny by false pretences from Deteetiv6-Sergeant •Snjith. The sergeant said on bank holiday the man was in charge of a booth on Blaclcheath, and was shouting: “ Com b in knd see a real live woman, tattooed .by a Chinese maniac ! ” Bowman admitted that his wife was tattooed in "Deptford. Outs'de the booth there was a notice reading: “ This is a warning to all English girls. A white woman tattooed from bead to foot by a Chinese maniac under the influence of dope. Doctors admitted free.”
Bowman said this was merely show man’s bluff—they had to put up a new advertisement each time they ran ;* show.
The magistrate said it was sometimes difficult to draw the tine between what was bluff and what was dishonest. This was a fraud.
Detective-Sergeant Smith said in 1922 the woman was fined for a similar offence. She was then advertised as having been captured by the Germans, who had tattooed her against her will.
