SPORTING NOTES.
[ A feature of Saturday’s racing at. j Riccarton was the wonderful success ! in toe saddle • of ..Maurice McCarten. He has. \ bad a phenomenal, run of late ' and on Saturday he performed the hat trick, winning the New Zealand. [ Cup, the Welcome Cup, and the Stewards’ Handicap, with successive I mounts. The winning of these three events in the *one afternoon is an unparalleled fear that is likely 'to stand lor many a day. McCarten is riding exceptionally well, and a ! deserves bis success. Last year lie headed the list of winning horsemen in New' Zealand. He went to Australia with Jones’s team, and opened his account in. the land of the Cornstalk by winning three races-in one afternoon. Before he returned home he piloted Ballymena to. victory in the A.J.G. Derby. He returned to bis own country in' time to* ride at the Wellington meeting, and won with the. first ride he, had. Other successes followed, but Saturday’s performance caps, everything he has. ever done.
The unlucky horse of the Gup race was Roseday, who rah third and ought to have won. He dropped into a good position after the start, and Was well placed 'till about six furlongs from home,, where he lost his position. He was disappointed when looking for an opening a little later, and did not. get clear till the race was almost over. When he cut loose in. the ‘ straight he travelled taster than anything else in the /race, and it is'certain that had he got out sooner be would have won. His form makes him out to be as good as bis southern admirers say he is.
