THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.
The. weather has been so warm lately thai tomatoes planted ouJt now should do well. If the' ground has been manured for a previous crop i + -\, will not be necessary to give them any manure until they have set the first burich of. fruit at least. To put them into heavily manured soil only means that they, are going to make growth , at the expense of fruit. Make a sowing of runner beans about the end of this month or earlier if the seed >can be sown in pots under cover. It is quite worth while to do this, as it gives a chance of getting an earlier crop and the plants are so much easier to protect from slugs when they are set out. Sow French beans about every, three, weeks for succession and do not forget the successional sowings . of peas. Cucumber, marrow, pumpkin, and melon seed can be safely planted outside now,, but it is a good plan to give them the benefit of boxes covered with glass as we 'have explained from time to time; Before earthing up potatoes give the rows a good dressing of lime. Slacked lime is the best, it not only helps the potatoes but it also keeps blight away from them, Sow the main crops of carrots and parsnips this month and as soon as they come up thin the young plants out to about three inches apart. It is a good plan to go over the newly planted asparagus beds now and if any of the. plants have missed to. put in some more, there is still time for them to make good growth. Plant out a few more cabbage and cauliflower plants, but see that the soil is well manured or they mav, not make much growth. We have "found that it is a good .plan to give these plants a light dressing of nitrate of soda as soon as they begjin to make some growth. Keep all growing crops hoed and free from, weeds. A correspondent asked about the Chinese cabbage, and when it should be planted out. If he has already sown the seed he will find that, the. plants will bolt to seed; it does better when it is sown in December , and the young plants set out about January. The plants will then come in for winter use and very fine vegetable it is then.—Standard. ;
