C.D. FARM MANAGEMENT.

MR MCCULLOUGH RESIGNS

TO TAKE UP FIELD WORK

I Mr W. J. McCullough, tfho has been manager of the Central Development Farm, Weraroa.,' lor the past four years, has resigned owing to ill-health ' and will conclude his connection with the Farm at the end of the present month, 'being succeeded temporarily by Mr j'. Shepherd, manager of the Te Kauwhata Horticultural Station, llawkes Bay. Mr McCullough has transferred to the Fields Division of the Agricultural Department, from which he came to take* oyer his present position, and will succeed Mr F. W. Greenwood as Agricultural Instructor for the Wellington District, which.is to be considerably enlarged and will extend from Wellington to Te» Ante in the . Hawkes Bay province, thence across to the Oroua River and south by Feilding to Foxton. If will embrace the whole of the Wairarapa, Manawatu, and Rangitikei districts, as well as the greater part o.f Hawkes Bay. During his 17 years' connection with the Department, of Agriculture Mr McCullough has had a considerable experience in this class of work, having joined the Fields Department 13 years ago as assistant to the South Island Instructor, there being\ at that time oniy one instructor for each island. He was stationed at Christchurch in this capacity for four years. When the growth of the Department necessitated the cutting of the South Island into two districts, he was given charge of the southern division, with headquarters at Invercargill, remaining in this.position until he transferred to,WeWoa four years ago. Although taking over the Central Development Farm at a time when the'financial stringency, necessitating as it did the, severest economy, curtailed very considerably the activities, of the Farm as an experimental station, Mr McCullough has done excellent work in the interests of agriculture and stock-breeding during his connection with the'' Farm, his field work being always carried' out in a manner which was convincing, to farmers -from its suitability to local conditions and its strict applicability. In stock-breeding he has been particularly interested in Rdd Polls, devoting uhuch time and thought to the improvement of the milking characteristics of that breed, with the idea of producing a dual-pur-pose cow, which besides being of a particularly strong constitution and suitable as a beef type, would yet produce a sufficiently high percentage of butter-fat to plaice her on a par with the leading butter-fat strains. During his tenancy of the managership, the annual Farm Schools were inaugurated at the institution and to the retiring manager's interest aYia enthusiasm a great deal of the success of these draining pjeriods has been due.

Of unfailing courtesy, Mr McCullough has made many friends in the district during his residence here, "a|l of whom will wish him continued success and improved health in his new sphere of activity. -
