CENTRAL DEVELOPMENT FARM STUD STOCK.
TWO RECENT IMPORTATIONS
The two two-year-old bulls—Red Poll and Friesian—which have heen\ imported by the Agricultural Department to head those herds at the Central Development Farm, arrived at Weraroa this week after the prescribed period of quarantine in Auckland. The Friesian, Carnation King Matador Betty, bred by the Carnation Farm Company, *t|he largest breeders of Friesians in the United States, was junior and grand champion at the 1922 Shawano County Fair, against competition from all parts of the country, the title of Grand Champion corresponding to that of champion of a Royal Show in British countries. He is a remarkably well-developed animal of great bone, and although ratlher out of condition at present, shows in his fine, carriage, width behind the shoulders and . depth of flank,, the characteristics which gained him this position in America. On both sides of his breeding he shows remarkable milking and butterfat strains. He was sired by Carnation King, Slyvia, whose granddam, May Ecles Sylvia produced 1005.8 lbs of milk in seven days, an average of 152.5 lbs per day and was full sister to the world's champion butterfat cow, Agassiz Signo May Echo, who produced in one season 30,8861bs of milk with the extraordinary return of 1344.961bs of butterfat.
On (his. darn's side he is closely re lated to the world's champion milk production oow, her record being 37.381 lbs of milk and 1158.95 lbs of butterfat, whilst his darn's (Matador Ormsby B|et|ty) 802 of buterfat for one season is the highest of the dam of any bull yet imported into 1 " New Zealand. The Red Poll, Gresham Masterful, was bred by Colonel R. C. Batt, of Greslham. Hall, Norfolk, and combines the two leading Red Poll strains in England, the Gressenhall and Sudbourne. He is a bull showing considerable quality, fine in the bone and not overdeveloped in the beef type, the aim with. Red Poll's being to produce a dual-purpose cow. Both animals are unquestionably an acquisition to the stud stock of the Dominion and the progress of tlheir progeny will be watched with, interest by a wide circle of breeders.
