SHANNON WATER SUPPLY.

ROUTE OF PIPE LINE,

Advantage was taken of an opportunity of visiting the source of Shannon’s water supply by a, “xNews” represent«aiive yesterday morning. The site of the intake is in the Mangone

sri'eiain;, commencing approximately about 15 chains above phe Maugahao Electrical Power House. Practically speaking the pipe track from the source to ireservoir site follows the Maiigore stream, which is a distance of aoo>dt 45 chains. Ouir representative, on making an inspection of the route of the pipe line, says that, to a layman it. appears as though insurmountable engineering difficulties present themselves. a considerable ■ distance of the 'SO chains is on a steep rock face covered originally with scrub. The men have now /cleared the scrub away to enable the theodJite to find! the proper grade. This is now practically completed, as indicated by the red topped pegs to he seen along th© track. The engineer explained that by experienced men in rock cutting, a secure foundation for the pipe could be got at a not unreasonable cost for labour and no great difficulty would be experienced.. The levels chosen will place the pipes in a sale position aigiainst the heavy floods which very frequently occur in t)he narrow gorges of the Man gore stream At, the end of the 50 chains the. reservoir will be built to receive the water. From thence to the town the, pipe track runs through private properly. Near the eastern boundary of Mr Hennessey’s, • the track comes out on to the Shannon East road and from this point to the Borough boun-da-iy, where it passes into private property again and finally comics out at Grand street where the- reticulation will begin. The engineer states the upper portion of the works will be a, scene of activity in about three weeks.
