WIDENING OF GREY STREET.
ENGINEER’S REPORT.
The following i s the Engineer’s report and estimate for the. widening of Grey street as requested by the Council "In this case the street w6uld , also require to be regraded, this work together with the grading and permanent waiter ways would roughly .run, into £2500. I hardly think the resolution comprehends all this work. There are, .however, two very narrow lengths in Manga, hao street, which is a continuation of Grey street one of which is really very dangerous. In‘the latter place the cutting requires to be widened at least 6 feet for 5£ chains. The'spoil will require to be carted to
widen a narrow length opposite HoolCs land. This will cost £75. In-
creasing the width opposite Hook’s land by 4 feet £120; total £195. If the •above work is carried out Grey street i will be greatly improved, the portion that, is most necessary is the increase in the width of the cutting which is really dangerously narrow. The Mayor said it was quite, impossible at present for the Council to carry out the work as . they did not
have the funds. Cr. Hyde recommended that. a. loan be raised to put, the whole of the streets in order.
Cr. Carter; The cutting should be made safe. It is too important to wait tintil we get a loan, it should be done at once .as it is dangerous. The Mayor pointed out, they had not got sufficient money, viz.,' £75 to do the work and to* widen the portion near Hooks would require another £l2O,
Cr. Murray: It is no use getting estimates unless we have the money to carry on. He agreed with Cr. Hyde that the Council should try and get a loan to do- all necessary works.
Cr. Carter then moved that the Council call tenders for widening the cutting on the Mangahao road and putting the/ dangerous piece of road near Hook’s in order. This.was seconded by Cr. Murray. A further motion,'was moved by Cr. Murray: <T Thati the Engineer in conwith the Road Committee bring down a schedule of work necessary with a view |o a, loan being raised at. onco for t)he consideration of the Council. Cr. Gunning said if they were going to the ratepayers he would like tosee sewerage included in the proposal.’ as it was most necessary.' He contended' they should s*> for the lot at one hit.. It was decided to include the sewerage in the proposal C. Hvde said it was impossible to do anything of a comprehensive nature without money. The Council hoe pi read v hern too long in putting the streets iti order. . Cr. Carter sid he did not think they were ready for sanctioning a loan for nutting the streets in order until the water scheme had been carried out. On Cr' Carter’s motion being put it was lost. Cr. Murray’s motion was then taken which included sewerage, and was carried. GENERAU. The Engineer reported that the contractor for the cleaning of the Otauru Cut is making fair progress with the work.
It was decided to call for tenders for kerbing the plot opposite the railway station.
Accounts totaling £394 3s were Passed for payment.
