THEFT OF MONEY.
MANGAHAO EMPLOYEE, CHARGED. COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE. At Die Magistrate’s Court’ at Palmerston yesterday before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., John Morgan was charged that, between September la and 22, at Mangaore, he did. steal from the dwelling of Schimbri Marcel £l4 m money,' one purse value 4s, one American dollar, one dime piece and one 50 centimes piece, the property oi Schimbri Marcel. Accused was represented by Mr Ongley. Scbunbri Marcel stated that he was employed by the Public Works Department at Mangahao, and in the >hut in which he lived he kept a steel box in which were his personal effects and -money. On September 22 he opened the box and found the money and articles mentioned in the charge were missing. He knew accused, who lived in a hut opposite to him,.:
v Constable McGregor, of Shannon, deposed to interviewing accused with reference to the theft, which he.' admitted. He made a statement to witness in which he stated that he was employed as a carpenter by the Public Works Department at Mangahao. On Tuesday, September 18, he entered the hut, occupied by Marcel and broke open the steel box and stole the money which was contained in a purse. Oi the stolen money he had sent £5 to his wife and had discharged various liabilities with the balance. He re-gi-eUed the theft, and would make restitution. Witness added that the accused liau given hint an order on the Public works Department for tile payment to Murum oi the amount stolen lrom him.
Accused, having heard the depositions, pleaded guilty and was commuitu to the supreme Court, Wellington, lor sentence.
