AN ARCTIC TRAGEDY.
Tim tragic end of the Wrangel expedition has overwhelmed Stefansson, who knew that the situation was probably critical but did not expect a tragedy. . ■ ' 6 * There must be some special cxplanation,” he says. “When the men landed at Wrangel in September, 1921, they had only one year’s supply, but game, such as* seals, bears, and wolruses,. arc plentiful, and thev had 'sufficient ammunition for ten years. A. healthy man armed with a rifle should' live there .in comfort indefinitely. Unfortunately they had no wireless outfit. They were not relieved earlier bccflbse the funds were exhausted.”
The original expedition, when a supply ship was sent out, was a month late. The ice prevented its reaching the party. Crawford’s last communication cheerfully remarked on the absence of ice and the presence of an abundance of driftwood suitable for fuel and buildings. lie mentioned also excellent game prospects.
