CONDITIONS AT MANGORE.
MEN FORM BRANCH OF LABOUR PARTY,
A mass meeting of ihe men at Mang|Oxe, .was held during last week end, when several matters aftecting the welfare of the men were discussed. It was revealed at the meeting that serious dliscomtiemjt exists respecting the conditions ol employment, especially with regard to the class of iood supplied at the cookhouse conducted hy the Department, it being clearly shown that the men are asked to pay too high a price for the quality of the food supplied. Other matters discussed were 1 the low standard of wages obtaining throughout the whole of the works, and the unstisfactory conditions of employment.
The conditions obtaining at the cook-house were considered so unsatisfactory that the men last week decided to petition sfhe Minister for Public Works to immediately remedy tfje existing conditions, failing which many of the men have signified their intention of leaving the works. ■ After full discussion, it was unanimously- decided that the most effective means of having these conditions improved was to form 1 themselves into a branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, and practically evuy man In the camp became a member, it is the intention of the executive to approach the men at Arapeti and Mangahao to become members, and there is little doubt that these will also join up.
The following officers were appointed: President; Mr R. V. McGlone; vice-president, Mr Geo. Connor; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. M. M. Jenkins; executive, Messrs A. E. Woods; C. W. Duckworth, and T. H. Quarterman. '.
