HOROWHENUA CRICKET ASSOCIATION. THE ANNUAL, REPORT. The annual meeting of the Horowhefiua Cricket Association will be held ■on Wednesday evening next at Levin, when the- following report will be placed before the delegates by the hon.' secretary. '“The cricket season, in the Horowhenua district would fully justify being termed a most successful one. The senior competition opened for the championship of the northern end on November 4th with five teams), viz. Shannon, Public Works, Y.M.C.A-j Weraroa and Foxton, a feature of the sport, being the revival of the Foxton Club which, had not taken part in the game for several years, andmhe formation -of the Public Works Club at Shannon. It was regrettable, however, that the very sporting club oi Moutoa should have been unable to raise a team, and it is hoped that- he coming season will again see this club among the competitors. Towards the end of the season, Foxton vothdrew owing to being unable to raise a team, and the final rounds created great interest, being keenly • contested, an this, portion, of the competition von liv Shannon. The southern end of the district entered three teams: OtakiA and B, and Rahul. .. Otaki won the southern championship,, and in the Dla-v off for the shield agamst Shannon secured #e honours by defeating mat team after a most exciting game. The final match was played at . Le^ n and thanks is due to those Levm enthusists Who prepared the wicket toi the event. During the one representative match was played } the "against- Tararuia, and here Horowhenua secured a -victory. Our long s ason and great, number ot cup match s made it impossible for us to play many -representative matches. It is a oily, however, that Horowhenua. has not a ground suitable for rep, cricket, as sending a, team to matches at Palmerston Noith dom not gairi the sympathy of the public towards cricket in this district “A new departure m cricket, and a valuable one, was made possible b> the inauguration of a challenge competition. This was the outcome of a, generous donation by Mr J. ‘O’Connor, of Levin, of a- cha ten we cup. T-he cup originally held by the Levin Convent School was won nml held until nearly the end of the . M - nn bv the Shannon school, but was finally secured by the Otaki Maori College team. Besides these t\ schools., Levin D.H.S. (primary divis-. ion) competed. It. is hoped that.moie schools will take part this season and so help to lay the foundation ot better cricket, and nobler manhood. The Association will be asked do considei the introduction of an age limit loi -moils competing lor the O Connor Cup. Hitherto, any boy, irrespective of age attending a primary school could play. 1 . “The Association suffered a great ioss of one of its'most, active members in. the death of Mr Thomas, who had ’ always been a great supporter of thri game in this district. Financially the Association is m a very sound state. The balance sheet will show a credit! of £5 5s lOd, besides having in hand two match hats procured last- season.
“Thanks are due to the several umpires who so willingly gave up their spare time in helping along the game, and to Messrs Williams, of'Levin, and Perreau, of Foxton, l'oi J use of them respective rooms for 'Association meetings.”
