SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tue usual rortnightly meeting ot the borough v Council was. held in the Council Chambers, on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Beard. Gunning, Curran, Hyde, and the Engineer (Mr Edwards). CORRESPONDENCE. Mr D. M. O’Connor forwarded a plan of improvements he intended carrying out to a building in Grey street owned by him, which had been condemned by the Health authorities. —Referred to the Engineer. From Mr J. A. Grumwald stating that when he tendered for the. contract of lamp-lighting in the Borough h© understood he was to 'be paid for moon light nights When be did not go out. He said it was the usual custom in other places. to pay Mr Grumwald as he requests. From the Department of Internal Affairs, re regulations in respect to Government advances on workers' dwellings, stating the Act had now .been amended to extend the payment •of interest and principal on buildings erected mainly in wood to 30 years and in -the case of other dwellings to 36J years.—Received ! FINANCE COMMITTEE. Cr. Gunning, chairman of the Finance Committee submitted a report in Which he stated they were not making the progress they should and that the ratepayers were not getting good valuje for their money. He thought there was room for plenty of improve ment. The ‘ committee made the following recomendations : “That outstanding rates and overdue accounts be. sued for forthwith; “That the Council be recommended not to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr .1. Dalziel, but that tenders be called- for the work, the nature of Which permits being done by contract. . “That" one permanent, roadman only be employed and that consideration be given to the current rate of wages. “That the relative costs of hiring teams as against keeping horses be gone into. “That proceedings be taken re neglect. to' take out licenses. Cr. Gunning stated the finances were in a healthy state. On going into the estimates the committee found the receipts exceeded the expenditure by roughly £IOO, which must be considered highly satislactC>The Mayor agreed something different should be done. During the war and just after everything had been so high in price, but he thought the time was now opportune to make a forward move. He .agreed with the recommendation to employ only one man and thought as a test when the Council wanted metal carted to call tenders for it. He would not approve of disposing of the horses and drays until it had been tried. He was quite satisfied the money spent had not given the best results and had had that opinion for the past five years. He congratulated the Committee on the report they had brought down. Cr. Gunning:' We mulst go into the relative cost of the whole; thing. V is a matter of whether we employ some one or do our own work. . Cr. Curran suggested calling tenders for a permanent carter for delivering metal to any part of the Bor°UThe Mayor then moved that the • recommendations of the Finance Committee he adopted and recommended ( to the Road Committee.— Agreed to. GENERAL, It was decided that applications bo called for the position of permanent roadman at a salary of £3 10s per week with free rent and grazing for one (cow. „ , . It was decided to prosecute all taxi drivers plying for hire wit.hou : t| a license. , . . . In regard to the wandering stock nuisance, which has Ween very prevalent of late owing to the illness of the ranger, it was decided to appoint. a temporary ranger. As the finances of the Borough arc now in a healthy state Cr. Hyde moved that the plots near the station be kerbed and paths put down was decided to instruct the Engineer to prepare plans and call) tenders. Accounts totalling £95 13s 8d were passed for payment.
