“RUN UNDER RAiFETf RULES.” AN OTAKI PROTEST. A special meeting of the Otaki Chamber oJ: Commerce was held last night, the President, Mr. L. G. Lowry, presiding. In opening- the Chairman remarked that members of the Chamber were desirous of meeting representatives of football clubs to discuss matters for the welfare of the game and the allocation of representative matches. He added that the Shannon Chamber of Commerce had already written on the matter and asked for support, that Chamber deploring tlio action of the union in fixing all representative matches for Levin. Enquiries had been made by the local Chamber with a view to answering Shannon’s letter, but very little informa-
tion had been available. The Chamber had written to the union seeking- information but no reply had been received.
Messrs Baker, ' McGill, and Watts attended on behalf cf the .footballers, and the ..former stated that it was unfortunate that the local club was not represented on the union, adding that at a meeting they had been out-voted. The union conducted its affairs under “Raffcty rules” and at the best only verbal messages, many second-hand, were received. Relative to Nash’s challenge bowl Mr. Baker said the local club had received no notification that Is team had to play and in consequence lost the match by default—a most unjust proceeding, especially as the club ad a good chance of winning. It was also evident that the local Chamber had been ignored, and he thought the best Avay to get over difficulties in future would be to form a sub-union. In answer to the Chairman,'Mr. Baker said the local footballers had no say in the fixing of representative matches. . Mr. McGill supported Mr. Baker’s remarks and suggested that the Shannon Chamber be supported, while Mr. Watts considered that as Shannon and Otaki had secured good “gates” more representative matches should be allotted these two towns.
Mr. Morse was assured that if the Chamber took up the matter it would have the solid backing of footballers. It was further pointed out if too late to do much good this season, good might result for next year. The union could be shown that something would have to be done.
It was decided to write to the union and ask that, at least one representative match be played here this season, provided there were still matches to play. It was also resolved to write to the Shannon Chamber offering support; also to the Foxton Chamber to ask them to do likewise.
