A WIN FOR WERAROA. SHANNON DEFEATED. Amidst great enthusiasm Weraroa deleatcfa Shannon on the Ley in- Domain last Saturday hy the. narrow margin of three points (free-kick) thereby breaking their two years’ duck egg. / me game was a very even one , throughout, although not marked hy any very high-class football. A.str-j lg wind .was biowing from the soutn-ea n i considerably assisting the team —Yv raroa in the. first spell—which had it at their backs, with the result that in each lhalf the greater part ol the play was confined to the northern hail of the field. Early in 'the game Hopa got a chance at goal from a penalty, ,and with his usual fine kicking, registered the. winning score. Weraroa opened up with a determined rush, a long kick up-field hy Henderson well followed up going out at tie 10 yds distance. From the throw in Rj Moynihan led a return attack into; Whites’ territory. A good tackle hy Wells and a long kick upfield hy Marslin again turned the tide and Iroin close hard play at Shannon’s '25, Weraroa were awarded a. free-kick, which Hopa made sure of. 3—o. Weraroa continued to press and from the. loose at the 25 Cole pickeu up and carried over, but could not force and the referee gave, a scrum from which Shannon lorced. The advantage of play remained with the White team which was now throwing the ball about freely amongst the backs, a nice passing rush in which Wells, Marslin and Hopa figured, failing on the line. The second half opened with a clash amongst the forwards, from which Moynman picked up the. ball and threw to Lenihan, who passed well out to Rowlands. Rowlands, however, was smothered near the line and the ball going to mid-field, Marslin saved by finding the line at the. corner. Shannon, with the wind behind them,, were now forcing the play, and with only a few exceptions, kept the ball in Weraroa’s territory during the remainder of the game, which was without special incident, and ended '3—o in favour of Weraroa. Mr T. Burrows was referee.
Saturday was an off-day in Shannon for football. A junior and thirdclass match were, set down to be played, but in both cases neither .eveniuated. In the juniors Mangore defaulted to Shannon, (having withdrawn, from the competition owing to their inability to raise a team, while the Levin Rovers failed to. turn up for the game with Shannon thirds.
PARAPARAUMU y. ROVERS. This was one of the keenest and most friendly games of the season. Mr Davis was referee and applied the advantage -rule to fine effect, making, it a crisp interesting game to watch andi kept the players going at top ail the time.. paraparaumu led off With a fine forward rush led by Gordon ai id Lynch, but Stoker saved by a timely kick into Touch. Mollison (Rovers) was next conspicuous with a nice run, ' threading his way through several of the opposing bp«ks, but hung on too long and lost a fln.3. chance to' score. Play was very fast at this, stage, the ball travelling from one end to the other with great rapidity as first one side and then the other made a determined effort to score. From one of these forward rushes Lynch, who .was; handy, fell on the ball and scored, the only try of the game, no goal resultin&» From half way. Williamson, Wildsmith and Frechtling broke away with a cood forward rush, but were stopped by the Paraparaumu full-back, who was penalised for lying on the ball. A fine kick resulted in a poster and the spell ended with Rovers attacking strongly. The second spell saw Rovers determined to equalise the. score, Bishop, Stoker and Short making! dashes for the line, the last-named getting over but being penalised for a knock-on. Paraparaumu’s defence was Kitchen ending near the Rovers line. Good play by Weal, Tantrum and i Redfern took the leather into the home team’s territory and a. strong attack ended in Paraparaumu forcing. From the kick-ott, Gordon, broke.'away and Lynch picking up in a loos? scramble potted a beautiful goal. Time sounded shortly after, the game ending Paraparaumu 7, Rovers 0 Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies and greatly 'appreciated by the visitors, three hearty .cheers being .-given for the hostesses.
