SHANNON MATTERS.
DISCUSSED BY COUNTY COUNCIL. At Saturday’s meeting of the Horowhenqa County Council a number of matters relating to Shannon were discussed. TAB-SEALING-MAIN ROAD. A petition was received from .28 residents of Shannon asking the Council to favourably consider tne tar-seal-ing of the main road, from Shannon Borough boundary to Makerua. The road was at present in perfect ordef lor tair-sealing and .they considered the work would soon pay for itself by way of money saved in maintenance. The Shannon Chamber of commerce forwarded a resolution strongly supporting and sympathising with the above request. The chairman said he was pleased to see that thes.e people were asking lor a permanent surface, but as far as the Council .was concerned it was a question of finance. If this had been brought forward at last meeting- when the estimates were being considered, a further id in the £ might have been added to the rates for the purpose. As it was the County did not have the money. The distance was 'about three miles, too big a thing to do out of revenue.
Cr. Broadbelt suggested tihat under the Main Highways scheme this road might possibly be gazetted a main highway. The chairman said that the main thing was that the. County did not have the money and suggested that a reply should be sent accordingly. He was very pleased to see the request .made and was certain that if it had been made earlier something could have been done. DRAINAGE MATTERS.
Mr R. L. Tippler, Shannon, wrote again drawing attention to the state ol the drain along his western, boundary, which the. Council put in several years ago to divert water from higher country and; which was damaging his crops and paddocks by overflowing tor want of cleaning. The drain wanted cleaning every year and I had not'been done for three years. He j did not desire to claim damages if ! treated fairly. i A further letter was received from Messrs Tippler and Woodmass, Shannon, drawing attention to the Kara road drain which was clausing damage to their properties. The agreement was that the drain be kept in order by the Council in return for the land given by the original owner for the Kara road, though the agreement was never signed. A lot of foreign water was now coming down the drain from the upper reaches. i Cr. Barber said that the. question of the drain along Mr Tippler’s property was a long standing grievance. The drain should be. cleaned out every year. It was three-years ago since ’ it was last done arid on that occasion the County hiad found half the cost and the property owners the. other half. This was not quite fair to the owners ris the' drain carried a lot of water and at times flooded the property, 'about a week ago considerably damaging a crop of green 1 As for the - Kara road drain, he thought a half and half allocation between the County and the owners i would be fair and When speaking to 1 Messrs Tippler and Woodmass he had ! suggested that they put. on one mlan | and the County put on another. ' j On the suggestion of the chairman, ■it was agreed that the matter be ? handed over to the Engineer and ; councillors for the Tokomaru, Riding, .with power to act. y
