SHANNON WATER SUPPLY.
The secretary, Shannon Ratepayers’ Association, forwarded the. following resolutions passed at a general meeting of the Association“ That in view of the detrimental report of Dr. W. F. Findlay, Government Departmental Health Officer, regarding the proposed source of waiter supply for Shannon, this general meeting of the. Ratepayers’ Association takes strong exception to the continuation of the. work until such time as. a definite understanding is reached concerning purity of water, sufficient supply, and extra cost ii any; also that if it is intended to alter the original scheme as voted upon by the ratepayers, we recommend the holding of a public meeting in order that the. new' plans be placed before the ratepayers.. ' Referring, to the resolution the Mayor said statements had been made by persons about the Health Officers’ report that really did not exist. An impression (had got about that the inspector had condemned all the sources of supply, but as. a matter of fact he had not condemned any. The -“News’’ htad stated in a recent issue the. Mangahao dam water would not be fit for use for two years after the dam is completed. This statement was not correct and he trusted .the, local paper would correct it.' The. Engineer (Mr Edwards) said not a word had been said against his scheme as some people seem to think. He went on to s.aiy that without a word of hesitation he did not think there would be a better supply of water in any part of the world. It is all a matter of dilution. Where a large volume of water was continually running it was impossible for it to become contaminated. He. quoted the Manawatu, as an instance, into which a. considerable amount of drainage enters, yet water is used from that, freely. The. small streams was where trouble arose, and they could only be used temporarily. As they could not keep farms off the catchment area, there was always the chance of the stream becoming polluted. Finally it was decided that the letter be received.
