IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE.

FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF. TUNNEL DISASTER. A memorial service was held in the Y.M.G-A., Arapeti, last Sunday, to the men who lost their lives during the construction of the No. 2 tunnel, Sunday, June 3rd. 1922. Some; 140 men and women, representative of the whole works, met together to pay tribute to the men who were killed and to the heroic little band who gave their lives in attempting a rescue. The service was conducted by Rev. Stewart, of Shannon. The Anglican minister and the Roman Caitholio priest were unable to attend owing to other engagements. It was brief and impressive, the minister speaking of this price that must be paid by ' those who toil, unknown and hardly thought of in these remote spots, that we might enjoy the blessings of civilisation. , Readings were taken by Mr Main, of Shannon, and Mr Doig, Y.M.C.A. secretary. : The meeting stood while the names of the men were read out ; KILLED WHILE ON DUTY. B. Butler. A. MaKwell. RESCUE PARTY. W. Miller, Engineer-in-Chief. F. Birss. W. Birss. F. Graham. P. Graham. KILLED JUNE 1921. A. Murdoch.

A minute of silence followed the reading of these names. The service was then brought to a close.
