BEES STILL BUZZING.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reference to M. A- Eagle’s last letter .to the Shannon “News,” after a long consideration, I duly come to the conclusion that some persons do not know what they are talking about-. There are only 88 hives of bees on the section and not .160 hives as she stated. You can, get any Government inspector to count them*. She also states it is two years now* since a complaint was 'sent in. to the Shannon Borouigth .Council, signed by eight of Mr Grumwaid’s close neighbours, and it is only about 18 months ago. But she does not state that there were two petitions taken out. One petition was for the removal of all bees inside the Shannon Borough] boundaries. This petition was 'signed by five people, and there was another petition taken out, for all bees to remain inside th£ Borough of Shannon where they are. This petition was signed by 55 people. Both petitions were taken to the post office and registered l to the Shannon Borough Council. I amt quite sure that bees will not take to lemons and oranges. It must halve been the flies that are always buzzing about cowsheds. I cannot- feed my bees on brown sugar or Java, sugar. It must, be. the very best of refined Auckland sugar for feeding bees. Any Government bee inspector will tell you this. I wish I could feed my bees bn jam. It would be far cheaper, but I can’t do that—l am!, etc.,
J. A. GRUMWALD
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Will you kindly allow me a little space in your valuable paper to make a few remarks on! the bee' nuisance. In the first place there is a rumour going around Newtown that the letters signed “De Profundis” were written by me. This I wish! to flatly deny, as I do> not agree with most of “De Profundis’s” statements, &nd my sympathy , is entirely with Mrs Eagle and Mr Veale, who -hav'e to live so close to Mr Grumwald’s bees. It is all very well for “De Profundis,” who lives as far away from the bees as I. do, to"treat this subject <a!s a joke, and it i® al pity he could not change houses with either of the- above, when he would certainly alter his views on this subject.—l am, etc.. A. T. BIRCHALL, Newt-own.
