Mrs Knight, of Whakatane, is visiting friends in Shannon. Owing to the holiday on Monday, the Shannon “News” will be issued on Wednesday next .week. All football matches will be postponed on Saturday owing to the Otaki races.

The silk knitted jumper for which the Tennis 'Club held a guessing competition as to how long it took to make, was the work of Mrs Laurvig, of Vance Street, and was a beautiful piece of work being donated by her for the competition. It took 33hrs 19 min. 30secs to coinplete. Monday, June 4, will be observed as a close holiday at, the local post office, in all branches.' All mails will close at 7.50 a.m. A delivery of all classes of correspondence wilf be made over the counter between 7 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, the 2nd. A rural delivery will be made on Tuesday, sth.
The Chamber of Commerce at iimeeting last night, oil the motion oj Mr Fargher, decided to donate a gold medal to the local school annually to be known, as the Shannon Chamber of Commerce gold medal, to be given for subjects to be laid down at a later date by the Chamber of Commerce.
At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening the matter of erosion in the Otauru Creek near Mr Curran’s property was brought up. Several councillors reported having inspected same and were of opinion it could 'be remedied at little expense. Mr Curran offered to provide horse and dray and two men if the Council \vould do likewise and carry out work at once. Mr Curran’s offer was accepted. At the Chamber of Commerce meeting last night on the motion of Mr Tippler it was decided that the Minister of Education he written to asking if the Board will consider the advisability when making appointments to the Shannon School of appointing more male teachers. The mover stated he did. not think it was in the best interests of the school to have so many female teachers.
The entries of factory butter and cheese at the Waikato Winter Show total nearly 900, easily a world’s record. Shannon were second for the North Island Cup, with 9'4 points, being only half ,a point behind Mauriceville. In the section for local trade
made by first assistants, Shannon gained first place with 95 points and were also winners of the Hawkes Bay and Wellington championship with 95J points.. With the record number of entries this must be considered a very creditable performance and Mr Aim and his assistant have received many congratulations upon their achievement.
