COUNTY ROADS AND SHANNON BRIDGE.

RECOMMENDATION .BY FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

At Thursday night’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce the president (Mr Hornblow) said the Chamber should lend its moral support to the Manawatu County Council in an 'endeavour to obtain Government assistance to deal with the Wirokino and Moutoa roads. The upkeep of these roads, owing to the vagaries. of the river, was a source of great, expenditure to the Manawatu County Council and the County Council would be justified in asking the Government to assist, in making them a safe highway for traffic. Assistance was asked by thececisggLe<s H...8Y was given by the Govemmient in connection with the Rimutalca and Paekakariki hills -and Manawatu Gorge roads and 1 the Horowhenua County Council had been granted a subsidy of £3 for £1 expended on the re-construction of its bridges on the main arterial road in their county. The Wirokino and Moutoa roads were works of an extraordinary nature and the County Council Would he justified in asking for assistance. The Mayor: The Shannon bridge should be included. Mr Hornblow suggested that the Minister of Public Works be invited to visit the localities. He moved that this Chamber recommend to the Manawatu County Council that' the Minister for Public Works be invited to visit the . Whirokino and Moutoa roads and Shannon bridge and that the Horowhenua County Council, Foxton Borough Council and Chamber of Commierce and member for the district be asked to co-operate with the Manawatu County Council if that body approves of the suggestion. In seconding the motion, the Mayor endorsed the president’s remarks and said that the Foxton Borough Council had not turned down any request for co-operation in connection with the Shannon bridge. The County Council’s proposal was in respect to the road deviation and stop bank. The bridge was in danger unless protective measures were taken to safeguard the structure. Mr Osborne pointed out that since the roads were impassable for motor traffic, shipping via the port, which was of the utmost benefit to Foxton. , i increased. As soon as the roads were put in order motor traffic would increase to the detriment of the port. The motion was carried -unanimously.

Meanwhile the conference called by the Horowhenua County Council will be held n ithe 'Parish Hall at Shannon on Friday morning after the arrival of the New Plymouth train. It is understood Mr Farkert, Chief Pubr lie Works Engineer, will be present.
