SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At the fortnightly meeting of the Borouigh Council held on Tuesday evjening, there was present: The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Crs. Curran, Gardner, Beard, Murray, Carter and Gunning. CORRESPONDENCE.
A letter was received from Mrs B. T. Curran stating that Mr Simes and herself could not sign any agreement with the Council in regard to the creek erosion. She stated it did not seem quite right that they should bind themselves not to take any action against the Council when it was due
to the Council’s negligence that the
creek was in the condition it was at present. She stated she would be pleas-
ed to hear if the Council intended to do anything - in the matter before 1 the property was subjected to about two feet of water, to say nothing of six inches of silt from, the front of the writer’s gate to the back door.—After some discussion it was decided to write to the solicitors, Messrs Martin and Atkinson, asking them to state a case as to the Council’s legal position.
An application was received from Mr J. T. Bovis (town clerk) asking for an increase in salary owing to the increased work in connection with the water supply and the progress of the Borough generally.—Held over until next meeting. From Department of Health, re garbage service in the Borough, recommending that provision be m'ade for •same in the forthcoming estimates and that a. weekly service be provided to the business premises. The Department suggested that the work be done, if possible, by Council employees; as any system of contract .is usually not found to be satisfactory. They also pointed out that a garbage disposal will 'help much in discouraging rats and mice in the Borough a ; nd will add to the appearance and reputation of the town.—Held over until c-timates are brought down. The Department of Health wrote in reference to the plague in India and precautions in the Dominion, pointing out that constant action against rats is necessary by all local authorities.—lt was decided to ask residents to desIroy rats and prevent rubbish accumulation.
Messrs H. Aspin, .T. A. Swindlehurst, and E. Buckman asking permission to extend their fences in Ballance street futrtfher out on the Borough road, which portion is not at present time ‘being used—On the motion of the Mayor the Town Clerk Be instructed to inform applicants “That the Council has no power to give permission for fencing on a road, but the Council does not object to you doing so, but if you do so you will require to keep the 1 drain cleaned and provided all the owners bring their fences out in line.’’
From secretary, Municipal Association of New Zealand, asking Council to send in .their remits for the conferences of delegates to be 'held in July next, as early as possible.—Received.
.Mr J. Blandford, Ballance street, applying for permit to erect washhouse, also asking if Council could let. him have some old culvert timber to make a crossing over present drain in front of intended gateway. —Permit to be dealt with by Engineer, application for culvert granted subject to usual conditions. A lot of correspondence was received in connection with the various sample * of pipes submitted for the water supply scheme, which were held over to be dealt with at. a future date. GENERAL. ■The sanitary account came up for discussion and it was noticed that the expenditure was considerably less than the revenue received from this Department.—The clerk was instructed to bring down a report on the matter before next meeting. The Mayor reported that lie had been to Wellington ami had made search in the Land Transfer Office regarding the Borough Reserves and the original dealings with the reserves. They had all been transferred to the Crown. However, the matter was still being searched further. Mr G. Grumwald 1 submitted a sample of carbide lamps for installing in the Borough.—lt was decided that Mr Grumwald forward quotation l'or 20 lamps, together with cost of lighting, to be considered by the Lighting Committee.
Owing to a great deal of time being taken up with the correspondence and the late hour the meeting was adjourned until Tuesday evening next when a special meeting will be called to deal with the estimates and general business.
