CAUGHT IN SYDNEY.

SYDNEY, April 27. By doping a bottle of whisky and leaving it in a prominent place in his shop,, a Sydney draper lias been sue. cessful in trapping thieves.

On several occasions recently tne shop had been visited by thieves and each time some goods and liquor left in a cupboard were stolen. Tired of losing his beer and spirits, the draper decided to place a chemical in a bottle oJ whisky and leave it for the next visit of the thief. The shop was broken into on Wednesday night. When the shopkeeper derived on Thursday morning he found his shop had been broken into, and a quantity of goods stolen, including the bottle of doped wh. .... . He reported the matter to the police.

The next episode was at the hospital. A man turned up at one of the public hospitals at about 3 o’clock in the morning, and com- I plained of feeling very ill. He asked | for some soda water. The doctor I m charge examined him and found I that he had drunk a chemical which ' had caused him much inconvenience * internally. He admitted him.

The police arrived at the conclusion that the man would have to seek medical aid, and inquiring at different hospitals. came across the man, who was affected as they suspected. Subsequently the goods taken from the shop were found not far away. It appears that while the man was in the shop he drank some of the whisky, and later became affected when only a little distance from the shop. A charge has been laid against him.
