The Druids’ Lodge meets at Parish Hall oil Thursday evening. The local school closes on Friday next i'or their winter holidays. Mrs Rollings, mother of Mrs T. 1. McGregor, who has been residing in Shannon lor some time, has ielt on a visit to her daughter at Taneatua, Bay of Plenty. In our recent report ol the llorowhenua Rugby Union in referring to the disqualification on 3. McDonald being re-heard, it was made to appear he was connected with the trouble at Shannon last season, whereas ha was in no way concerned'_in the matter.
The social evenings in connection with the Anglican Church to be held in the Parish Hall, will commence this evening at 7.30 p.m. These socials were very popular laist season and patrons can be assured of an equally enjoyable time this winter.
A true indication that Shannon is making a forward move is .tlie demand for houses and sections in the Borough, geveral having changed bands within the last few weeks. There are also enquiries for farm land, one agent, reporting having had no less than eleven enuiries within the past few days.
A large number ol' licenses have been taken out locally for the duck shooting season; but up to the present no good bags have been reported, in fact, the ducks are stated to be very scarce in these parts. One enthusiast who hag been shooting here for- years states that his axperience ea,ch year seems to. show >a. greater scarcity. At Thursday’.* special meeting of the Borough Council Cr. Carter made reference to the position of reserves in the borough, as to what they were intended for and where situated. He said he understood the present site of the Council Chambers was supposed to be half an acre, which was reserved for a Mechanics ’institute, and if the Post and Telegraph, Department, had taken a portion he would like to know why and what consideration they gave for' same. On his motion it, was decided that, a search he made in the the Land’ Transfer Office of all the reserves in the Borough to ascertain the position. The Mayor said toe was going 1.0 Wellington shortly and would make the search.
A lengthy letter was received by the Ilorowhenua County Council on Saturday from the Ohinemuri County Council asking for support for proposed amendments to the Motor Registration Act giving local bodies power to license all vehicles. The letter had been circulated throughout the Dominion. Tt was found, however, that the clauses of the Act on which the proposal was based had already been repealed and if the Ohinemuri Council had had its statutes annotated if would have saved the necessity of sending out the letter.
