SHANNON ATHLETIC CLUB’S SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. Six week' ago several sports enthusiasts called a meeting in Shannon lor the purpose of forming an Athletic Club. The matter was quickly taken up and by good organisation and every one putting their shoulders to the wheel, the Club was enabled to hold its first meeting on Saturday last. The Club was .ia voured with a fine day and together with the splendid entries received, ii was expected there wouid be a goou attendance. A large number journeyed from Levin and Palmerston North, while the surrounding districts were welt represented. The attendance tar exceeded the'number anticipated. Tiie Oiaki Brass Band was het at the Amion by tiie President (Mr J. T. Boris; and marched to llie grounds, where it rendered several items during the afternoon, which were mm appreciated. The proceedings commenced at 11.30 a.m. with tiie school children’s events, which aroused much keenness amongst the competitors. At 12.30 p.tn. the adult events were started and the committee are to lie congratulated on die efficient manner in which they got the various races off, there being no ddaggingas is so often to be seen at sports meetings.
The handicapping, which-was in the hands of Mr T. Stubbs, of Palmerston North,' was good, as was shown in the number of close finishes. Scratchings during die day were few. The track was in good order, several cyclists stating that they were able to put up faster time than at several other meetings this season. A pleasing, feature was the interest shown by the spectators in the various events. They warmly applauded the winners. Much a lorest was shown in the wood- ’ -ipping and tiax events. In the i'' iner (here were 16 and 14 i ompetilors; die finish in both events being very close, the local man T.. H. Sands winning boih. The flax event (bun-dle-making and tying) unfortunately, was left until the last owing to several of the competitors being engaged in the tug-of-war, many of those present having to leave early -xpressed ' regret at not being aide L witness it. It moved to bp verv inter-e-'lingy as also was the turning and '■wending. There . were three entries for the tug-of-war, Koputaroa, Miranui and Whitanui, the former after a hard pull defeating the two latter teams, the bouts in both cases going the fuTT time.. All the field and cycling events were keenly contested, die events being put through without a hitch. The officials and committee are to be complimented on the. success of the meeting, which goes to prove what can be done if everybody works together. It is only reasonable for the committee to feel proud of the excellent result, when it is remembered that it is the Club's first meeting, which always means a lot of hard work and expense. A word of praise is due to the secretary (Mr G. Watkins) and his assistant, who carried out their arduous duties in a. most efficient manner. The President. (Mr J. T. Bovis), nn being congratulated at the conclusion on the success of the gathering, said it was due to the energetic committee who had worked so zealously and brought' about such a .successful meeting. He hoped that Saturday's fixture was only the forerunner of many future successful and happy gatherings of the.kind on the Domain. Following are the result:— SCHOOL EVENTS.
