METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL. ANNIVERSARY.
'Tim {Shannon Methodist Sunday School held their anniversary tea, social and prize-giving in the Parish Hail on Friday evening, when there was a. large attendance of children and parents. Mr T. F. Gibson, superintendent of the Sunday School, presided. A large number of friends from Levin and Foxton were present. At, 6 p.m. the children sat down to l a plentiful supply of good things which were rjone full, justice to, after which a social was held, a good programme being submitted which was thorough lv enjoyed by all. The following was ihe programme: (Torus, “The Bells,’’ senior girls; or lion s< ;ig, “Two Little Hands": recitation, Miss Andrews (Levin); piano solo, Miss Evans (Foxton) ; solo ire-c died;, Miss Chalk (Foxton); solo, Mrs Bullard; solo, Miss Scadden: songs, Mr Andrew (Levin); song, recalled, Mrs-Bishop; fleci tuitions., 'Misses E. Swindlehurst, M. Ingley, F. Fletcher, V. Quarrie and Master Wilfred Baxter.
At. the conclusion of the programme the Superintendent announced that the prizes for the past year would be given out. He stated it was very gratifying to the Sunday School committee to be able to report that there had been a big increase in the Sunday School attendance during the last few months and he trusted it would continue in that happy state. Mrs Aldersey then made the presentations 1o the senior scholars, after which Mrs Frost delivered the awards that, had been made to the infant classes. Following are the prize-winners:
Primpry class.—GjirlsOlga Buckman, attendance 1; Joyce Quarrie and Nga.ire Payne tied for second prize; Joan Johnson 3; Joyce and Dvtlcie Ingley 4. Bovs: Alex Buckman 1, lan Byers 2. Infants; Ellen Easton, Edna and Jean Hill, Agnes and Mavis Jlausman, Beatrice, Blossom and Elsie Eiagly Lily, Fiorrie and Pearl. McPherson, Iris Cross, Doris Tremewan, Laura Eankshear. Boys; Jack Hudson, Bruce Dalzell, Arthur arid Willie Easton. ’Rev. Minifie then thanked Mr Gibson, llie superintendent, and his st: ff of assistants tor the valuable services they, had rendered during the year, pointing out that Mr Gibson had journeyed. from Levin in all weathers.
YOUNG WORSHIPPERS’ LEAGUE. Three girls tied,,for Ist prize, Rita Byers, Evelyn Swindlehurst, Li’v Fletcher, having full attendance-dor the year. Two lied for second, E a Quarrie and Vera Quarrie, only having missed one morning service during the past year. Joyce Quarrie received third prize. Constance Barber and . Ngaire Payne 4th; Ruby Payne sth prize Two boys tied for Ist prize, Wilfi at Baxter and Mervyn Byers, while- 1 ui Byers came a close second. SUNDAY SCHOOL PRIZES, Senior Girls.—Four tied for Ist prize, Eva Quarrie, Rita Byers. Evelyn Quarrie, 2nd: Mona. A POPULAR FAMILY
At the conclusion of the prize-giving a. presentation was made to Mr and .Mrs Ryer s ami family, who are afoul to leave the district.
Mr Ranks, as senior official ol die Foxion circuit, said lie felt honor red to have something tu say. The Lundy had always been ready to help in church mailers and were mainly responsible in procuring the car for the circuit. He imped the mantle of she livers family would fall cm the people of Shannon, who would carry out the work of God. Their kindness, willingness and zeal would ever he remembered by their work in; the church.
Mr Baxter then spoke on behalf of the congregation. He stated he had been associated with the family for the past four or five years and they had always had the interests oi the church at heart. Their loss is a calamity to the church and he was sorry they were going to part with them, hut he trusted that God’s richest blessing would always be on ihem
and they would be able to continue their good work. Mrs Garter, on behalf of the Lai lies’ Guild, said their loss would he somebody else’s gain. She stated thai at all times Mrs Byers had always wil-
lingly assisted in any church work: and tier departure would be a grant loss. She wished the departing family long life and happiness in anything they may undertake. Hew Mini fie stated filial lie personally felt the removal of the family with regret. I-le had never come across a man more willing to work than Mr livers and lie had never known him to make excuses. He paid a tribute to the manner in wlin.-n lie had assisted the church. Mr and Mrs Byers had been responsible for laying the foundation of the church services here and tie felt they could not leave Shannon without .something to keep the congregation in their memory. On behalf of their Shannon friends he would ask Mr Byers to accept, as a small token of the esteem in which he and his wife and family were held, a solid silver tea service. (Cheers).. Mr Byers, on rising to reply, was loudly applauded. He thanked the speakers for their kind remarks and said that anything he had clone was for the welfare of the church and he wished to thank them all for their kindness. (Applause). Mr Cordon Byers, who has been secretary of the Sunday School, was also the recipient, of a presentation from the Sunday School teachers, Rev. Minifio, on their behalf presenting him with a l , beautifully bound Methodist Church hymnbook.
