FARM SCHOOL SYLLABUS.
AN INFORMATIVE PROGRAMME
A Farm School, following oil the lines of that held so successfully last year, will open at the Central Development. Farm, Weraroa, on Monday, April 30, and will comprise a series of lectures on various agricultural subjects as well as practical field demonstrations, where possible, by the different expert* of the Agricultural Department. Leading breeders and others who have made a conspicuous success of their particular line will also lecture. The school will be officially opened on Monday morning by the Hon. W. Nosworthy, Minister of Agriculture, other speaker* being the Mayor of Levin, Mr W. H. Field, M.P., Mr J. Linklater, M.P., the presi-j deni of the Levin Farmers’ Union, etc. The programme for the week which, as will be l seen, is a very comprehensive one, will be as follows: Monday afternoon: Lecture on herdtesting by Mr N. F. Fulton, Government herd-tester and grader. Tuesday morning will be taken up by lectures on the following subjects: “Drainage” (Mr J. L. Bruce, superintendent of Experimental Farms for Nw Zealand); “Horses” (Mr W. T. Collins, Wellington, district inspector for Live Stock Division); and ‘Concrete work” by Mr S. G. Dawe. Afternoon: “Farm Pastures” (Mr A. H. Cockayne head of the. Fields Division); “Poultry” (Mr F. Brown, Chief Poultry Instructor for Wellington district); and “Grasslands” (Mr E. B. Levy, assistant analyst, Government Laboratory). . Wednesday morning: “Feeding for Milk Production” (Mr A. H. Cockayne); “Crop Diseases” (Mr G. H. Cunningham, Agricultural Instructor); “Dairy Type” (Mr J. L. Bruce). Afternoon: “Veterinary Demonstration” (Mr W. T. Collins); “Pigs” (Mr K. W. Gorringe, He.ad Instructor in Swine-Hus-bandry); ‘Farm Insects” (Mr D. Miller, Entomologist); and “Liming” (Mr F. W. Greenwood, Agricultural Instructor).
Thursday morning: Milking Machines find Milk-testing” (Mr A. McKenzie, Dairy Instructor). In the afternoon and evening Mr W. Perry, the well-known Wairarapa breeder of Romney Marsh and Lincoln sheep, will lecture on sheep management on the general far” There will also be lectures on the “History of Manuring in New Zealand” (Mr A. H. Cockayne); “Lucerne” (Mr J. M. Smith, AssistantInstructor of Agriculture for Wellington Province), and “Farm Bacteria” (Mr R. Waters, Assistant Analyst). Friday morning: Tour of district, visits to places of agricultural interest. Afternoon: Lectures on “Woolclassing” (Mr J. P. Cook, Wool Instructor); “Values” (Mr W. D. Hunt, GeneralManager Wright, Stephenson, Ltd., and a prominent Friesian breeder, and “New Zealand Meat” (Mr F. W. Greenwood). At 8.10, concert. As will be observed the week is going to be a very full one but with the best men of the Department as lecturers and demonstrators it must also be ai profitable one. Farmers from a distance are boarded at the Development Farm, lodging being supplied free, and the only cost will be the price of the catering for the week, namely 355. Besides those who will remain at the Farm during the course of the school, local farmers' are invited to attend at any time suitable to themselves, no charge whatever being made in their .case.
The Levin Co-operative Dairy Co. paid out 1/6 per lb of butter-fat for the month ending April 21st, as against 1/2 for the corresponding period of last year. The output for March was 93 tons as against 644 tons in March, 1922. The Kuku Dairy Co. has paid an advance of 1/3 as against 1/- for last year. The total amount of milk received for the month ending March 31 was 664,533 lbs, a substantial increase over the 1922 figures which were f. 59, 884 for the corresponding month. The following factories have also announced their payments for the month of March : Shannon Dairy Co. (butter), 1/7; Awahuri (butter), 1/6; Whakaronga (butter) 1/6 and l/6£; llavenswood (cheese),. 1/6; Kairanga (butter), 1/5: New Zealand Farmers’ Dairy Un< ion (butter), 1/4; Manawatu-Relianoe (cheese), 1/4; Tiakitahuna (cheese), 1/4 plus an additional payment of id for January.
