HONOURS WITH N.SAV
NINE RUBBERS TO SIX
SYDNEY. April 7. The tennis matches were continued in fine, but cloudy weather. The courts were heavy on account of over-night rain, and owing to a heavy downpour during the luncheon adournment, play was postponed till Thursday. Three singles and one doubles have been decided, each side having won two, and making the progress totals: New South Wales nine rubbers, twenty-two sets, 194 games, and New Zealand six rubbers, seventeen sets, and 175 games. . , Sims and France, particularly the former, had Ciernenger and Kirkpatriek on the defensive in the first set of the doubles. The local players fought out the last game stubbornly, in an endeavour to save it. Deuce was called eight times, and the second set sce-sawed until the fourteenth game when the New South "Welshmen carried off the honours. The New Zealanders went to pieces in the third set under the truly brilliant form of Clemenger. Wallace, though unable to keep up with Dive in the first set, turned the tables by cool, measured placements in the second set, and maintaining an excellent length, succeeded in curbing liis persistent opponent. In the following set lie secured a fine victory. France was unfortunate in meeting Baker at the top of the latter’s form. Lately he lias been very erratic, but to-day was unable to go wrong. Baker bad the energetic New Zealander chasing all over the Court. Robson’s mature experience enabled him to secure a narrow victory over Huthnance, who is making his Idebut in representative tennis. He is a local plaver full of promise, but lacking the polish of the finished expert. He imparts considerable pace to his services and returns, and should develop into a champion. Wallace beat Dive, 2 —6, 6—3, 6 —3; Baker defeated France, 6—l, 6—3; Robson defeated Huthnance, 7—5, 7 — 5 : ciernenger and Kirkpatrick dedeated Sims and France, 2 —6, B—6, 6—3. •
