It is very much to be hoped that Parliament w ill be able in the forthcoming session to reach some -finality with regard to the new policy of road construction and maintenance. At the present moment, Avith motor traffic increasing in volume every week, the roads of the Dominion are. suffering very severe wear and tear Avithout the controlling bodies receiving any compensation in the avuv of rates or taxes to make good the damage. County Councils are faced with heavy programmes of road construction and replacement of bridges, but Ure afraid to move OAving to uncertainty as to what consideration they Avill receive Avlien the new higlnvay authority is established. As things are, local bodies cannot be expected to do their full share in roadmakirig, and the roads and bridges must get steadily intp worse condition.
