Mr Ernest Short has purchased from the Johnston Estate the rich area at Awahuri known as “Highden.” Mr Short has made to the Government a proposition for the use of the (homestead as a national institution. The land will' he divided into 21 sections, their areas ranging from 18 to 125 acres. They will not be thrown open for public competition, but will be valued by Mr Short and an expert and ; will be offered to selected men by the ! new owner on liberal terms. Messrs J. Hofmann and Sons, of Foxton, have just acquired an up-to-date motor hearse and are prepared to conduct funerals in any part of the district. The vehicle has been built by Adam Burges, Ltd., of Palmerston, and the workmanship is in that firm’s usual thorough style.
