SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL
MUNICIPAL MATTERS DISCUSSED
The t fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Co an cil Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present—T!he Miayor (Mr Murdoch), and Ci‘s Spencer, Butt, Fargher, Hyde, Murray and Richardson. OVERSEER’S REPORT.
The Overseer reported that during th’ei past month Mr Butt and he had re-dressed the footpaths with tar and sand. Twelve barrels of tar and fifteen yards of sand had been used to do the work. About half of the paths that had been done still required to be| swept off and cleaned up. The garden plot has been put in order and sown in grass and when the grass came through it would be rolled. He hafi received complaints of broken culverts and had repaired all that he had timber for. There were several culverts in the Borough that were giving way and required renewing and he suggested they be replaced with concrete pipes. Be stated he had already applied to the Town Clerk to order twelve large pipes for a broken culve'rt at the northern end of Plimmer Terrace, which had fallen in at both ends. Cr Spencer said the time had arrived when wooden culverts should be dispensed with and he suggested that ; the Overseer supply a schedule of 9inch pipes likely to be required in the next few months.
Cr Hyde said timber, etc. should also be included.
The Mayor moved that the Overseer make up a schedule of pipes and timber required and send in to the Town Clerk.—Carried. RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION’S SUGGESTIONS.
The Shannon Ratepayers’ Association forwarded a rtacommendation as
follows: “-That something might be dona to-make the streets more familiar to residents and visitors to the town by having the names erected as is the case in other towns and boroughs; Alsg, that in view of the sticky nature of the top-dressing of tar and sand being applied at persent to the footpaths, the attention of the Borough Council be drawn to the result of a test case in Palmerston North some time ago, when a business man secured heavy damages against the Council for carpets spoilt by tar and sand being tramped into his premises from the footpath. The Court maintained that the Council should have placed down temporary footways of timber or other suitable material until such time as the tar had dried. The Council decided that in future in tarring the streets the Council would put down temporary footways of timber or other material to pi*event damage to business premises. In regard to the naming of streets it was , the opinion of the Council that it was most desirable, and on the motion of Cr Murray it was decided to plan out what would be required and have a sum of money put on the estimates for the work next year. GENERAL. Cr Hydei drew attention to the unsatisfactory state of the culvert in front of the Druids’ Hall in wet weather, which caused a big pool of water to lie there. He suggested curbing the roadway in concrete and making a water channel to slope up ancl down. He said he was prepared to contribute half the cost of the work. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the Road Committee inspect and report to the Council. The Engineer is to be written to and asked for a report on the erosion in the Otauru stream near Mr Curran’s poperty; and also la report on his interview with the engineers of the Public Works Department and Makerua Drainage Board as to the Council’s position re taking gravel [ from the Otauru stream.
The Mayor moved that all correspondence that takes place in connection with the wafer scheme should go through the Town Clerk.—Carried. The Town Clek stated that the outstanding rates up to March 31 was £l3oo.—Cr Spencer moved that alt defaulters be notified that outstanding rates must be paid by April 16, otherwise summonses will be issued and judgments entered against the land—Carried.
Accounts totalling £54 5/1 were passed for payment.
