ALLEGED PRIVILEGED CATTLE.
REPLY TO THE RANGER. At Tuesday's meeting ol the Borough Council, the following letter was received from Mr J. Dalziel, replying to a report forwarded to the Council at its last meeting by the Banger, in which !he stated Mr Dalziel had instructed him not to impound certain stock: “Re letter received from Town Clerk referring to letter received from Borough Ranger, accusing me of.giving him strict orders to leave three head of stock on the road, which 1 believe belong to Mr Carter. This statement I deny to be 'correct, ! am affair of liis, own makeup. What 1 did do, when Ihe roads were overrun with stock, and had been for some time, was to inquire from tlie Mayor if the roads were open, and informed him. of so 1 much stock on the roads. Later _ the Ranger asked me who owned the three head of stock in question. I told him I thought by the ear-mark that they were Mr Carter’s, and had come from his flooded property, and that if he was going to impound them to do likewise with all other stock on the roads. On no occasion have I ever given the Ranger any instructions as to leaving any man’s stock on the roads. Neither have I ever wandered from the truth to save my situation. —.T. Dalziel.”
The Council decided t*' accept the statement as correct.
