HAWKE’S BAY WINS
t Great interest was taken pin this event and it was generally expected a. k keen contest would eventuate, but , Hawke’s Bay proved too strong in the ■ earlv stages of the game, and, while Pare ora held their Own at the finish, they never had a chance of annexing the Cup. Hawke’s Bay had faster ponies, and the yolirfger team. Combination and hard hitting were a feature of their play. At the conclusion of the game, Mr. C. A. J. Lcvett, vicepresident of the Polo Association, m a short speech, stated that Hawke’s Bay had now .won the Cup 12 times. He congratulated the team on its win and, asked Mrs. Levin to present the Cup to the winning team. Mr. O. Nelson, ( captain, returned thanks lor the hos.pitality extended to the teams while in Feilding. ' . > THE PLAY. The teams were: —Ha\vke’s Bay—l J. Lyons, 2 O. Nelson, 3 F. McKenzie. 4 E. Nairn. Pareora: 1 Orbell; 11. Ellworthy, 3 Miller, 4 A. S.Elhvortliy. Almost immediately Hawke’s Bay attacked and Nelson scored. Hawke’s Bay: 1; Parfeora: 0. Hawke’s Bay continued to press. McKenzie took the ball *up. and Nairn scored,. Hawke’s Bay: 2; Pareora: 0> Hawke’s Bay were controlling the game' and Me. Kenzie was again to the fore and Nel. son scored. Hawke’s Day: 3; Pareora: 0. Qrbell staved off a good attack and when near the goal, got his stick fHwisited, and Hawke’s Bay cleared. Paredra now took a hand in the attack, but Nairn relieved with a fine backhand stroke, and I|awke’s Bay thanks to McKenzie and Lyons got . away again, Nelson scoring. Hawke’s Bay: 4; Pareora: 0. . Second spell: Hawke’s Bay, by fine play on the part of Nelson and Me. Kenzie, scored once more. Hawke’s Bay: 5; Pareora: 0. A. Ellworthy staved off another Hawke’s Bay at. tack, H. Ellworthy and Orbell assisting, but Hawke’s Bay were still pressing. Nelson, by a good run, hit on to Lyons, who scored. Hawke’s Bay 6; Pareora: 0. Combination by Hawke’s Bay enabled Nelson to increase the score. Hawke’s Bay: 7; Pareora: 0. McKenzie and Lyons working well to. gether, took s the ball to Pareora goaJ, whqre McKenzie, with a beautiful hit between his pony’s legs, put the bail through the posts. Hawke’s Bay: 8; Pareora: 0. Third spell: H. Ellworthy put in some good shots, but Hawke’s Bay, wißi fast ponies, put the ball behind, repeating the performance shortly af. ter. Nairn and Nelson, with a good run, enabled Nairn to add to the score. Hawke’s Bay: 9; Pareora: 0.- On resuming, Miller and Orbell, by pretty work, enabled Orbell to draw first blood for Pareora. Hawke’s Bay: 9; Pareora: 1. Lyons put in a good close shot and the score was Hawke’s Bay: 10; Pareora: 1. Miller got the ball away with a lead, but his pony was not fast enough, and Hawke’s Bay saved. Orbell and Miller put in some good work, but Hawke’s Bay at tacked, and got a behind. Hawke’s Bay still attacking, A. S. Ellworthy scored, and carried the'ball well down
the field. Orbell put in a very fine run and just missed the goal with his shot. Pareora still attacked and W: Ell. worthy scored with a good long shot. Hawke’s Bay: 10; Pareora: 2. Fifth spell: Orbell got well a'way. but Nelson hooked his stick in front the goal, and McKenzie scored*. Hawke’s Bay, with good combination, carried , the ball behind. Nelson and Lyons were prominent in a repeat performance. Some very fast play ensued, both sides showing good play, \ with Pareora combination' .improving. ! Hawke’s Bay. got the ball near the goal and Nelson scored. Hawke’s Bay: 11; Pareora: 2. Sixth spell: McKenzie had a shot, but just missed. Hawke’s Bay had an. other shot, with the same result. Mil. ler and Ellworthy, by good play, went the length of the ground, but Nairn saved and Hawke’s. Bay. attacked. A. 11. Ellworthy made a good run, but the ball went behind. Seventh spell: Miller staved offl a Hawke’s Bay attack with some good strokes, and Pareora attacked, H. ELI- - scoring. Hawke’s Bay: 11; Pareora: 3. Pareora continued to press but could not get the ball through. Hawke’s Bay, with a long-shot, enabled Lyons to score. Hawke’s Bay: 12; Pareora: 3. Miller did some good hitting, but no one backed him up, Lyons made a magnificent run to fin. ish up the match carrying the ball from his OAvn goal and scoring, the game ending Hawke’s Bay: 13; Pareora: 3. HANDICAP CUP. The semi-final for the Handicap Cup followed betAveen Rangitikei A, two goals and Rangitikei B, 15 goals. The teams Avere: —A—l N. Scott, 2 H. Nelson, 3 R. Nelson, 4 R. L. Levin. B: I R. Scott. 2 R. Dalrymple, 3 R. McKelvie, 4 N. Scott. First spell: Play Avas very even and fast and the teams well matched.
Second spell. After some give and take play, A carried the ball to B’s goal and Levin scored. A: 3; B: 15. B attacked from the. play off and R. Dalrymple scored. A: 3; B: 16. B again set up an attack and R. Dalrymple scored. A: 3; B: 17. Levin carried the ball to B’s line, and a B player carried it behind his own line. The free hit was resultless.
Third spell: A attacked, but McKelvie came to the rescue and took the ball to A’s goal line, but missed his last shot. A attacked in return, but only got a behind. A’s again attacked with a good run and N. Scott had a shot, which just missed. A’s still kept up the attack, and from a difficult angle, scored. A: 4; B: 17. A again attacking, Levin had a shot, which stopped dead at the post, and a B player put the ball behind.
Fourth spell: IA had a free hit, which a pony kicked out, but MvKelviq centred and N. Scott A: 5; B: 17. A team now got better com. bination and were doing the forcing, but B had a free hit for crossing, which relieved them. A still attacking, got two behinds in quick succession. Dalymple cleared the lines, but McKelvie and R. Scott attacked. A’s then attacked strongly and. Levin galloping up, scored. A: 6; B:17.
Fifth spell: McKelvie did some good riding off, but A’s were not to be denied and H. Nelson shot a fine goal 'A: 7; B: 17. A playing with good com. bination controlled the game, R. Nelson and N. Scott showing out prominently. The former with a good backhand stroke, staving off a B attack. A penalty against A’s resulted in a behind.
Sixth spell: Some fast play took the game to A’s line, but the ball struck the post and Levin cleared. A’s attacking, Levin and H. Nelson putting in some good shots and from an. other attack, N. Scott goaledfA: 3; B: 17. Another A attack resulted in a behind. ,
Seventh spell: Play still continued fast and Levin, with three fine strokes, hit the ninth goal-for A. A: 9; B: 17. McKelvie got away, bht was not supported. A’s kept up the attack, but could not score, and the game r,e» suited At Si 12i
