STANDARDISED TEXT BOOKS

VIEWS OF WAITAKi’S HEADMASTER.

OAMARU, Last Night.

Invited to give his views on the Department’s proposed standardisation'of text books for secondary schools, Mr jMilner, rector of the Waitalti Boys’ High School, says the proposal meets with the approval of his staff and himself. He adds that, the proposed list appears to be both liberal in text-book provision and . comprehensive in embracing the most progressive works having the largest school backing. The scheme was supported because it means great economy in wholesale purchases by the elimination of a multiplicity of discredited and obsolescent text books. It contributes directly to educational efficiency and gives guidance to the minor schools. If there are experienced teachers and extramural students it does not discourage initiative or individuality.
