SPORTING.
It is reported that a certain Wanganui resident,.who is well known,in' sporting circles, telegraphed extensively to his friends during the recent Dannevirke meeting: “Yes, arriving to-day.” This, of course, could be taken to indicate that a certain horse with a lady name was expected to romp home and pay a good dividend. Thfe horse never got a look in, and one of the recipients of a telegram who has returned to Wanganui, is now wondering' whether instead of “Arriving to-day” “Posted missing” would not have been a more appropriate telegram. « At any rate the State derived some benefit in the way of ; revenue to the Telegraph Department, < A pleasant ceremony took place at thei residence of 'Mr L. R. Freeman, retiring secretary of’the Foxton Racing Club, when the local trainers and caretaker made him the recipient of an] enlarged photograph depicting a unique event in the history of hurdle raping. The picture shows four horses —Sir Fisher (A. Laurence), Arlington (Gi Trail), Confusion\ (A. McDonald), and Waitomo (D. Crawford), taking a hupdle simultaneously at the local meeting. It is a wonderful piece of photography with all the louses above the obstacle in line. Some happy speeches were made appreciative of Mr Freeman, both as an official and sport.
