SECRET OF MATTERHORN DISASTER.

CARRIED TO GRAVE BY GUIDE,

WAS THE ROPE CUT ?

(Received Monday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, March 12. A Geneva message states that Peter Taugwalder, a well known Zermatt guide, died on Saturday, aged 81. He was the only survivor of the Matterhorn disaster, of July 14, 1865. The secret of the Whymper disaster is thus maintained apd it will never b;e known if Taugwalder cut the rope in order to save his own life, as Whymper as. sorted, or whether th,e rope was old and worn and parted under the strain of four men dangling over the glacier. Taugwalder afterwards never passed the spot without a short silent praver. He has climbed the Matterhorn 125 times since the accident without a mis. hap.
