MANGAHAO HYDRO NOTES.
. -4 PLENTY OF CLIMATE. MORE DAMAGE AT RIVER CAMP. ■ (From Our Own Correspondent.) Once, again the, Hydro works have been' treated to a deluge, of just a little bigger size than the last. At the River Camp the Mangahao rose just two feet higher than previously and successfully pushed aside a considerable portion of the work in hand. Just what delay this will cause in the completion of the work is not quite ascertainable at 'the moment, but it must be considerable. NARROW ESCAPE FROM FLOODED ■ TUNNEL. ■ ■ t At Arapeti the Tokomaru Stream rose very rapidly and flooded the No. 1 turmel for quite a while. Messrs. Shaw and McGregor had a narrow escape in making their exit. These tunnellers were aware that, the creek was rising, but were very anxious to “fire a round” at the face which was ready, 'lhe few minutes delay gave them a very narrow margin of safety, and they emerged from the tunnel up to the arm-pits in water.
In the No. 2 tunnel a slip occurred in the vicinity of the : pumping plant. The roofing is ba'd in this particular part, and the concreting was in progress. Clearing gangs, were: working on all through. Sunday and had nearly cleared the fall-in when some more came down.
The wet weather hangs on, and ah hopes of any summer this year is very remote. 1 SCHOOL CHILDREN DISAPPOINTED. Our local school children were disappointed in not being able to join, in the excursion to Plimmerton. Transport arrangements were made and quite a number intended making the journey. Climatic conditions were decidedly adverse, but to cap the lot themotor lorry engine went on strike and refused to go. By about 11 a.m. the engine responded to the crank handle, but by that time the tears of disappointment had been dried and the local youngsters were turning to, other avenues of amusement to fill in the day.
